Fundraiser set for 84-year-old woman injured in Windsor attack

The family of a woman seriously injured in an attack last summer is turning to the public for help.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the 84-year-old victim, who was walking in downtown Windsor in August 2023 when she was attacked from behind.

Two passersby stopped to help the woman, who suffered grave injuries. The attacker was later found, tried, and sentenced to ten months in jail.

Sabina Song, the victim's daughter and the creator of the fundraising page, said her mother has had a very long, difficult recovery.

"Two surgeries to release pressure on her brain, two rehab admittances, and multiple emergency room visits and hospital stays have kept her alive, switching between cognition problems and mobility issues," wrote Song on the GoFundMe page. "While the family is all hopeful that this last surgery will ‘bring her back’, it is a slow process."

Song added that her mother was a presence in the community, and the incident robbed her of the joy it brought her.

"This attack was a brutal and terrible incident that has taken so much away from her," wrote Song. "From being an active individual contributing to society, she has spent the last year in emergency rooms, O.R.s, and rehab facilities."

Any funds pledged will be used to cover any private long-term care options, and support family members who have been caring for the victim at home while waiting for a long-term care bed.

The page has a $50,000 goal. As of Wednesday evening, over $2,800 had been pledged.
