Prescribed burn coming to Pelee Island in late August

Ontario Nature will be on Pelee Island at the end of this month to conduct a prescribed burn.

The conservation group said it will perform a prescribed burn between August 26 and September 7, weather permitting, at the Stone Road Alvar Nature Reserve. The burn will affect 11 hectares of the reserve.

"Throughout history, fire has revitalized the Alvar, keeping it open and free of shrubbery, allowing rare plants and animals to flourish," read a release from Ontario Nature. "Periodic prescribed burns will provide the same results in a controlled fashion."

Lands & Forests Consulting will perform the actual burn.

Ontario Nature said that the Alvar is home to over a hundred rare species, including several species at risk.

"It is a property which is significant not just within the region but provincially and nationally," read the release.

Complete information on the Stone Road Alvar Nature Preserve can be found on Ontario Nature's official website.
