The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is offering some tips for those planning to travel into the country for the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Wait times are expected to increase with more traffic than normal. Wait times can be viewed on the CBSA's website.
We're told that early mornings are the best time to cross the border to avoid longer waits, and the holiday Monday is expected to be the busiest travel day.
Consider an alternative port of entry with shorter wait times or less traffic, have your travel documents ready, and declare everything in your vehicle.
The CBSA said firearms, weapons, narcotics and cannabis need to be left at home and there are certain guidelines for pets, including having the necessary vaccinations.
The agency said the best way to save time is to be open and honest with the border services officer. If you are not sure about what to declare, don't hesitate to ask.
The CBSA said it's dedicated to planning and preparing for peak periods, including long weekends and summer months.
Traveller volumes are monitored and measures are taken to minimize border wait times at land ports of entry and at international airports, without compromising safety and security.
The CBSA welcomed over 86 million travellers in 2023, and intercepted more than 72,200 kg of prohibited drugs, cannabis, narcotics, and chemicals, representing an increase of close to 30 per cent from 2022.
