CAN-AM Urban Native Homes is building 12 new affordable housing units in Windsor with help from the federal government's Rapid Housing Initiative.
The 12-unit apartment complex will be completed early in the new year and will house singles and small families who are at risk of homelessness.
"Already the spots are spoken for in terms of the applications that we have, it's kind of over subscribed, " said Eric Hill, Executive Director of CAN-AM Urban Native Homes. "We're looking at this to help house singles and families."
There are around 30 people on the waiting list for these units, which will be ready for occupancy in February.
"This is a first step, this is 12 affordable housing units. We need many more steps but this is real progress, this is real partnership," said Windsor-Tecumseh MP Irek Kusmierczyk.
The Rapid Housing Initiative provided $3.6 million toward the project. Other funding came from a donation from the Humphries family, Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services, and Ontario Builds.
