Essex County OPP urges caution as winter travel season begins

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex County have reminded drivers that winter travel presents unique challenges.

Police have provided tips designed to keep you safe in winter weather, and get you from point A to point B safely.

"Winter driving conditions can be unpredictable, with icy roads, heavy snowfalls, and reduced visibility posing challenges to all drivers," said OPP Constable Steven Duguay. "By preparing your vehicle and adjusting your driving habits, you can reduce the risk of collisions and ensure everyone gets to their destination safely."

Safe driving begins with your vehicle. Make sure you have the proper weather tires and that they are inflated and in good condition. Check your lights, top up any fluids, and check your battery as cold weather can affect its performance.

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle in case you get stranded. It should include a flashlight, blanket, first-aid supplies, non-perishable snacks, a snowbrush or ice scraper, and booster cables.

If you must travel on snowy or icy days, the OPP suggests you give yourself a lot of extra time to get to where you need to be. Allow plenty of stopping distance and give snow plows and salt trucks room to work.

Also, slow down. Speeding can make winter travel dangerous. Speed and ice can result in the loss of steering or braking control.

Monitor the conditions before you head out. On rough weather days, visit Ontario 511 for road conditions, and check out WindsorNewsToday.ca for traffic updates and potential road closures.
