Essex County OPP busy with five impaired driving cases

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex County say that some drivers are still not getting the point about the consequences of impaired driving.

Officers were busy this past weekend, arresting five people for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Two arrests were in Kingsville, two in Leamington, and one in Lakeshore. They'll try public transit for 90 days after police suspended their license and impounded their vehicles for a week.

In the first incident, just after 1 a.m. Saturday, an officer stopped a vehicle for going too slow on County Road 45 in Kingsville. The driver, a 26-year-old Kingsville woman, is charged with failure to comply and driving while suspended.

The second was before 2:30 a.m. Sunday at a Festive RIDE checkpoint on Erie Street North in Leamington. Police say the driver showed signs of impairment. A 30-year-old Leamington resident faces a charge of operating with excessive blood-alcohol content.

About a half hour later, an OPP officer on patrol spotted a vehicle being driven erratically on Erie Street North in Kingsville. They pulled over a 31-year-old man from Stratford and arrested him for impaired driving and driving with excessive blood alcohol.

The fourth incident was just before 7 p.m. on Sunday. A 77-year-old Lakeshore man was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Lighthouse Cove. He is charged with impaired driving and driving with excessive blood alcohol.

Finally, an OPP officer patrolling just before midnight on Monday spotted a vehicle on Poplar Street in Leamington. After speaking with the 65-year-old driver, the Leamington man was charged with impaired driving, driving with excessive blood alcohol, driving while suspended, driving while prohibited, and driving without insurance.

All charges have not been proven in court. The five suspects will appear in a Windsor court in the weeks ahead.
