The University of Windsor has a lot to celebrate after climbing almost 300 spots in the 2024 QS World University Rankings.
"The university's ascent in the global sustainability rankings is a testament to the transformative work happening across our campus," said University President and Vice-Chancellor Doctor Robert Gordon. "This achievement reflects the impactful strides the university community has taken toward a more sustainable, more equitable future."
The university placed among the top 20 universities in Canada and within the top 20 per cent globally.
Overall, it ranked 341st out of 1,751 institutions and 90th in the Americas. Last year, it placed 601.
For equality, the University of Windsor placed among the top ten per cent globally, partially because of its Flip the Script with EAAA sexual assault prevention program. The initiative has resulted in a 46 per cent reduction in completed rapes and a 63 per cent decrease in attempted rapes. The ranking was 165th worldwide.
It was 240th for good governance after demonstrating transparent financial reporting and a dedicated sustainability office, which is tasked with carrying out its carbon-neutral master plan.
As for environmental research, the university placed 269th for projects like the Real-time Aquatic Ecosystem Observation Network and collaborations with the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research.
Since 2019, the university has cut its greenhouse emissions by 36 per cent. It intends to improve that to 45 per cent by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
