The union representing Vets Cab is issuing a safety warning about the increase of unauthorized ride shares.
An unauthorized or pirate rideshare is a ride commissioned through social media but not on an app like Uber or Lyft.
"We want the public to be aware that such services are not legal services and may pose some safety risk to themselves and their family," said Emile Nabbout, Unifor Local 195 president.
Nabbout said Vets Cab drivers are much safer because all drivers have had a background check and are properly licensed and insured.
"They have a lot of traceability, there are cameras in the vehicles so anything that happens between the client and the driver will always be recorded," said Nabbout.
The union is also calling on the City of Windsor to crack down on these unlicensed and unauthorized rideshare drivers.
"We call on city officials and the commission in the City of Windsor to increase enforcement and be vigilant of what they can face," said Nabbout.
Unauthorized rideshare drivers can face fines of up to $110.
