Trudeau tries to reassure Canadians ahead of Trump inauguration

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited Windsor Thursday to reassure businesses and workers that the government still has the power to fight tariffs threatened by incoming President Donald Trump.

"The federal government continues to be there for them and will fight for them in this incredibly crucial time where an incoming American administration is proposing tariffs that would damage not just people here in Windsor but people right across the country and indeed the United States, this is the time for the prime minister to show up and fight," said Trudeau.

Parliament is currently prorogued after Trudeau announced he will step down as Liberal party leader.

Trump will be sworn in as president on Monday and has threatened to introduce tariffs on all Canadian goods if measures are not taken to improve border security.

"The border plan that we've put forward and the measures we put forward have been very well received by different members of the incoming American administration. What the president is going to choose to do will be entirely up to the president," said Trudeau.

The government announced a $1.3 billion plan to improve border security despite their claims that less than 1 per cent of illegal drugs entering the US come from Canada.

"We are confident that we have demonstrated that Canada is not the source of border challenges for the United States," said Trudeau.

Parliament will be prorogued until March 24. Trudeau will remain Canada's Prime Minister until a new Liberal Party leader is chosen.

"I'm glad to be in Windsor and I am going to continue to do my job as prime minister every single day. Which is defending Canadian interests, standing up for Canada, and actually defending the most successful trading relationship in the world between Canada and Americans," said Trudeau.
