The Municipality of Leamington will not proceed with a proposal to build affordable housing on the site of a former school.
Following repeated, extensive efforts to strike a deal with Amico Properties Inc., concerning the former Leamington District Secondary School (LDSS) property, Leamington announced on Thursday that it will not proceed with a proposed attainable and affordable housing project there.
"This project represented an exciting opportunity to expand attainable housing in our community, and we did everything we could to make it work," said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. "We are proud of the bold and innovative approach we developed to tackle our local housing crisis, despite the fact that housing is not a lower-tier municipal responsibility. While it is disappointing that an agreement could not be reached, we must move forward in a way that best serves Leamington taxpayers."
Leamington councillors approved the proposal in the summer of 2023, for the property at 125 Talbot Street West.
Councillors will now consider options that include demolishing the former LDSS building and looking at other development proposals.
