OPP provide more details about suspicious fire at former LDSS

The Ontario Provincial Police have cordoned off the site of a fire at the former Leamington District Secondary School as the investigation into last Friday's incident continues.

So far, officials have not released what started the fire aside from saying it's suspicious. The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.

The building was empty at the time, and no one was hurt.

So far, officials haven't released a damage estimate, but firefighters were called to the scene around 9 p.m. that night and worked until Saturday morning to put the flames out.

A week ago, the Municipality of Leamington decided not to proceed with an affordable housing project on the former school's site after an agreement with Amico Properties fell through.

It announced the proposal in the summer of 2023.

Councillors will consider other options for the site, including looking at other developments and tearing down the building.

Anyone with information about last Friday's fire can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or go to www.catchcrooks.com.
