WDLC endorses NDP, Unifor Local 47 supports PC

Ontario voters go to the polls in two weeks, and the Windsor and District Labour Council is throwing its support behind the region's four NDP candidates.

In Windsor-West, that would be Lisa Gretzky, the incumbent. She was first elected MPP in 2014.

Gretzky faces five competitors. Moe Chehab of the Ontario Liberals, Mark Dewdney of the None of the Above Direct Democracy Party, the Progressive Conservatives' Tony Francis, Joshua Griffin, running for the New Blue Party, and Nick Kolasky of the Green Party of Ontario are also running in Windsor-West.

For Windsor Tecumseh, Gemma Grey-Hall got the nod. She's running against incumbent Andrew Dowie of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario for a second time.

Other candidates in that riding are Kyle Ford of the Communist Party, the Liberal Party of Ontario's Connor Logan, New Blue Party candidate Sophia Sevo, and Roxanne Tellier of the Green Party.

Rachael Mills, the NDP candidate in Essex's riding, got the labour council's nod. She's also running against Anthony Leardi, an incumbent from the Progressive Conservatives.

Also running in the riding of Essex are Stephen Higgins of the Green Party, Travis Jacques of the Ontario Party, former Kingsville deputy mayor Tamara Stomp, who is running under the Liberal Party of Ontario banner, Kevin Linfield of the None of the Above Direct Democracy Party, and independent William Szabo-Verzoc.

Christian Sachs is the NDP candidate in Chatham-Kent-Leamington facing off against incumbent Trevor Jones of the Ontario PC Party, Liberal Bill Kirby, Matthew Davey of the Green Party, New Blue Party's Rhonda Jubenville, and Phillip St Laurent of the Ontario Party.

The WDLC represents more than 31,000 workers and supports candidates who champion labour rights, social justice, and the interests of the working class in Windsor-Essex.

"Windsor-area workers and their families just can't trust Doug Ford's priorities," said WDLC President Mario Spagnuolo. "Whether it's U.S. tariffs, the high cost of living, or the shortage of family doctors, Lisa Gretzky, Gemma Grey-Hall, Rachael Mills, and Christian Sachs are definitely Windsor-Essex's best choice."

Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles reiterated her party's support for working Ontarians while accepting the endorsement.

"In good times and in bad, New Democrats are on the side of workers," she said. "As Premier, I will fight for every single job, defend every single worker, and stand up for every single sector in the face of these threats (U.S. tariffs). Workers in Windsor, Essex, Chatham, Tecumseh -- know that at a time like this, when thousands of jobs, livelihoods, and industries across Windsor are at risk, they need leadership that is on their side."

Meanwhile, a lone Unifor Local is endorsing Doug Ford and the Ontario Progressive Conservatives.

Unifor Local 47 represents workers at Expertech and Bell Technical Solutions.

The endorsement was welcomed by PC leader Ford.

"I am honoured to have the support of Jeff Mark and the 115 hardworking women and men in Windsor, Chatham and Owen Sound who belong to Unifor Local 47," said Ford. "With the strong support of Ontario's skilled trades workers and a strong, stable mandate, our Ontario PC team will continue to protect Ontario workers by investing in high-demand sectors, ensuring new jobs, expanded training opportunities, and a stronger future for workers at Unifor Local 47 and across the province."

The election is Thursday, February 27.
