NDP leader rallies in Windsor as campaign nears end

The leader of the Ontario NDP Party made a push for Windsor-Essex support ahead of Thursday's provincial election.

Marit Stiles held a small, but responsive rally Monday afternoon at Windsor's Lanspeary Park, accompanied by local NDP candidates Lisa Gretzky of Windsor West, Gemma Grey-Hall of Windsor-Tecumseh, and Rachael Mills of Essex.

Stiles said that now was not the time to take the foot off the gas pedal.

"My message to you is that we have to get out there and talk to more voters in the next couple of days, and knock on more doors, and put up more signs," said Stiles.

The leader touched on many issues in the NDP's platform, such as healthcare and the condition of schools, criticizing PC Party Leader Doug Ford for the party's handling of those issues.

Stiles also had some things to say about the Liberals, who hope to regain official party status.

"The Liberals are trying to convince people that they're a better option, that New Democrats should vote for Liberals. Are you kidding me?" said Stiles. "The party that brought us 'hallway healthcare'."

Despite recent polls showing that the Progressive Conservatives are in line for a third straight majority government, Stiles told reporters that the NDP is confident it will make inroads.

"We're feeling pretty good, pretty strong, but we never take anything for granted, I'll say that," said Stiles. "I want to make sure every single person gets out to vote when they're voting NDP."

Gretzky, the only NDP incumbent in Windsor-Essex, is running against Tony Francis of the PC Party, Nick Kolasky of the Greens, Matthew Giancola of the Ontario Party, Joshua Griffin of the New Blue Party, and Mark Dewdney of the None of the Above Direct Democracy Party.

Grey-Hall is challenging Windsor-Tecumseh incumbent Andrew Dowie of the PC Party, along with Connor Logan of the Liberals, Roxanne Tellier of the Greens, Sophia Sevo of the New Blue Party, Steven Gifford of the Ontario Party, and Communist Kyle Ford.

Mills is up against PC Party incumbent Anthony Leardi of Essex, Tamara Stomp of the Liberals, Stephen Higgins of the Greens, Kevin Linfield of the None of the Above Direct Democracy Party, and independent William Szabo Verzoc.

The election is Thursday.
