UPDATE: Upcoming emergency exercises focuses on fictional nuclear event

On Friday, emergency officials will start a new training exercise simulating a nuclear event.

The City of Windsor, Windsor Regional Hospital, the Towns of Essex and Amherstburg, the County of Essex, and provincial partners will participate in the exercise, which will continue next week.

Service disruptions may occur at the Libro Recreation Complex in Amherstburg on March 17, 18, and 19. Business at Team Rehab, however, will not be affected.

The WFCU Centre in Windsor will be partially closed to the public on March 17 and 18, with service users having been notified.

Patient care at Windsor Regional Hospital should not be disrupted.

The exercise offers officials an opportunity to demonstrate their skills, refine the emergency plan, and build partnerships.

"This exercise is essential to ensuring our emergency teams are fully prepared to protect our community in the event of a crisis," said Amherstburg Fire Chief and Community Emergency Management Coordinator, Michael Mio. "By working with our municipal, provincial, and international partners, we are reinforcing our emergency response capabilities and strengthening vital relationships that are critical in an actual emergency."

The Windsor Essex County Health Unit is using the exercise to remind residents who haven't picked up their potassium, or KI, pills. A list of the distribution locations is posted on its webpage.

The exercise concludes on March 21.
