Lawn watering restrictions in place

Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC) has put lawn watering restrictions in place for municipal water users in Wheatley and Tilbury.

According to the PUC, the reason for the new measures is due to excessive demand on the water supply.

"Due to the current limitations of the water treatment system in Wheatley and the warmer weather that this region has been experiencing, lawn watering has placed extra demands on the water system," stated CK PUC Director of Operations Karen Burgess.

The restrictions are for both residential and commercial consumers and apply to lawn watering, all irrigation uses, and all other non-essential uses of the potable water supply.

Customers with odd-numbered addresses will be allowed to water their lawns on odd-numbered days.

Customers with even-numbered addresses will be allowed to water their lawns on even-numbered days.

The rules came into effect on Thursday and could be expanded further.

"CK PUC may need to implement further restrictions if the water system does not see any relief," Burgess said.

There is a two month grace period for newly sodded lawns.
