When the Muslim Community of Windsor organized its food drive last weekend, it had hoped to raise $1,000 for each of the 17 charities it supported.
It did better than that. The Spirit of Ramadan food drive raised $1,200.
Spokesperson Sousan Khaled said the total after Sunday's food drive at Devonshire Mall was $21,000 plus grocery gift cards.
The event supported a list of charities, including Drouillard Place, The Children's Aid Society of Windsor and Essex County, the Downtown Mission, and the Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope.
This year's food drive also marked its 20th anniversary. Khaled said it started in 2006.
