LaSalle Police warn the public about scammers pretending to be officers

LaSalle Police say someone has cloned their phone number and is calling residents, claiming to be a police officer.

They say the caller knows the victims' first and last names and provides a fake badge number and occurrence number. They then tell the resident they've been the victim of identity theft.

Police say it's a scam. They would never report an identity theft that way, and the scammers are trying to get personal information.

"The callers are female or male with various accents," said a release. "If you receive this call, hang up, and do not release any personal information. If personal information is disclosed, contact your local police service and bank to notify them of the incident."
