The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has reminded residents of the risk of avian flu.
There are no active cases in Windsor-Essex, but the health unit has said that the threat of avian flu is still present in the local bird population.
"With the change in seasons, birds are migrating back to our region in large numbers, potentially bringing illness with them," said Windsor-Essex Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mehdi Aloosh. "Avian flu has been spreading to other animals, and there have been cases of human transmission in other states and provinces."
Aloosh has hosted a short video, available on YouTube, listing tips for residents on how to keep the threat of illness away.
"Do not touch any dead bird or sick animal. Ask for help, call your municipality," said Aloosh. "Teach your children to protect themselves from wild animals."
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), there are ten active primary control zones (PCZ) for avian flu across the country. Three of them are in Ontario, among commercial poultry, but none locally.
There are no active human cases of avian flu.
If you have specific questions about avian flu, contact your healthcare provider. The health unit has complete information about the avian flu on its official website.
