Local charities celebrate Smile Cookie donations

This year's Tim Horton's Smile Cookie campaign raised nearly $300,000 for two community organizations.

The Hiatus House and W.E. Care for Kids each received a cheque for $148,376 after the week-long campaign.

"All week long, we felt the energy, we felt the community supporting it, we felt the cookies being made and the smiles being made. We are just over the moon with this donation today," said local franchisee Vicky Smith.

The Hiatus House will use the funds for a number of ongoing projects that support women and children escaping domestic violence.

"It just means a world of difference. There's so much that we'll be able to do with this and so much work we'll be able to do for the women and children in the shelter, and it's tremendous," said Maggie Durocher, fundraising coordinator for the Hiatus House.

W.E. Care for Kids will use the funds to purchase two new ventilators for the NICU at Windsor Regional Hospital.

'It's amazing, I did not expect this much, but it's amazing. It's going to help a lot of children and families in the community," said Executive Director Viki Grado.

The two charities were selected by the local franchisees as the recipients of this year's spring Smile Cookie campaign.
