The Downtown Mission food bank will be filling its dwindling shelves thanks to a donation from Caesars Windsor Cares.
The funds were collected on the casino floor from customer donations. The Caesars Windsor Cares foundation matched the donations for a total of $11,490.
"What we did was put a donation box out on the casino floor for customers to share in their winnings via fast cash tickets into a donation box that would be donated to the Downtown Mission," said Mary Riley, Vice-President of Resort Operations. "With that we promised we would match whatever funds the customers donated."
Each month, the Downtown Mission provides food to over 800 households in the community.
"This is a huge donation for us. It will help keep the food bank going. We're seeing more and more people coming to us every day and it's getting harder and harder to fill those shelves," said Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin, Executive Director for the Downtown Mission.
