Ontario Chief Coroner to look into Sandpoint drowning

A drowning at a Windsor beach over Victoria Day weekend will get a closer look.

The Ontario Office of the Chief Coroner will investigate the death of a 15-year-old boy at Sandpoint Beach.

At around 3 p.m. Sunday, first responders were told that two teenagers went swimming, with one going underwater but never coming back up.

The Windsor Police Marine Unit quickly began a search, getting support from the Coast Guard, Canadian Armed Forces, and Ontario Provincial Police. The teen's body was found at around noon on Monday.

Spokesperson Stephanie Rea with the Chief Coroner's Office confirmed to WindsorNewsToday.ca that it is involved but declined to provide details, citing privacy regulations.

"In Ontario, coroners investigate roughly 20 percent of all deaths in the province," said Rea. "For the most part, investigations occur when the death is sudden and unexpected."

Anyone with information on the incident should call Windsor police at (519) 255-6700, ext. 4000, or Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
