A dog has been killed in an attempt to stop an attack in Windsor's west-end.
City police were called to a dog attack at 10 p.m. Friday near the intersection of St. Joseph Street and Bloomfield Road.
Police said when they arrived on the scene they saw multiple people attempting to restrain a pit bull- rottweiler mix, while others were helping a woman with significant injuries to her left arm and hand.
The woman had tried to intervene after her two dogs began fighting inside of her home.
Police said the attack continued outside and while trying to separate the dogs, one of them bit her hand and refused to let go.
Investigators said several bystanders intervened with one person stabbing the dog repeatedly to stop the attack.
When officers arrived they used control poles and restrained the still-aggressive canine until the Windsor/ Essex County Humane Society could arrive.
The woman was taken to hospital and the dog was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Police continue to investigate the attack and anyone with information is asked to contact police at 519-255-6700 extension 4000 or Crime Stoppers at 519-258-8477.
