Man charged with assaulting police officer after downtown melee

Windsor police have arrested a man following a violent incident downtown over the weekend.

Officers responded around 11 a.m. on Sunday to a convenience store on Ouellette Avenue near University Avenue. They learned that a man entered the business and punched two customers, who didn't know him, without being provoked.

Police say the man then ran to a restaurant on Chatham Street and was caught on video kicking the front door until the glass shattered.

The suspect was found a short distance away, but when officers tried to take him into custody, the man assaulted one of them. The man was tasered and eventually subdued.

The victims and the officer suffered minor injuries.

A 37-year-old man is charged with two counts of assault, assaulting an officer, resisting an officer, and mischief under $5,000

The charges have not been proven in court.
