City of Windsor closes Sandpoint Beach to the public

Sandpoint Beach is officially closed.

Over the next few weeks, residents will see signs posted and fencing around the beach closing off access.

City staff will be at the beach to inform visitors of the closure.

Measures will be in place by June 24.

"We understand how much Sandpoint Beach means to residents and families, especially during the summer months," said Windsor's Commissioner of Community Services Michael Chantler. "Safety must always be the priority. The Parks and Recreation team is moving quickly and with urgency to put safety measures in place to protect the community."

Windsor City Council voted this week to shut down the beach while it waits for a coroner's report on the recent drowning of a 15-year-old boy. There's been nine drowning deaths at the beach since it opened in 1980.

Councillors also voted to review their Sandpoint Beach Master Plan to decide whether to relocate the beach, modify the existing shoreline, and upgrade amenities.
