Closer ties between University of Windsor and military to benefit veterans

The University of Windsor has signed an agreement to join the Canadian Military, Veteran and Family Connected Campus Consortium.

The consortium of academic campuses across Canada, which started with the University of Alberta, helps veterans make the transition to civilian life. It began with military and veteran communities connecting with post-secondary institutions. It serves as a one-stop shop for veterans, helping them navigate and access educational opportunities.

Tuesday's signing ceremony at HMCS Hunter brought together military leaders, university officials and community members to celebrate their shared vision of inclusive and student-focused education.

"Joining CMVF3C is both a symbolic and practical step to ensure military-connected students and their families feel supported and valued on our campus," said Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Bill Van Heyst. "This partnership reflects the University of Windsor's dedication to building inclusive, responsive learning communities that serve those who have served our country."

Lieutenant Commander and Commanding Officer at HMCS Hunter, Chris Elliott, says the signing is a meaningful step towards building a stronger bridge between the military and academia.

Students in the military often have challenges like frequent relocations, shifts in academic expectations, and the emotional impacts of military life.

The university will enhance services, including academic accommodations, peer mentorship, and greater campus awareness and training initiatives.
