Essex County OPP raises awareness of 'funny money'

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are drawing attention to an increase in counterfeit money circulating in Windsor-Essex.

The Essex County detachment has encouraged residents and business owners to be mindful of the risk of fraud.

The OPP says it's easy to check if a note is good. For example, a good $20 note should include raised ink on the number 20 and the words "Bank of Canada". There should also be a transparent window with a detailed portrait, shifting images on the holographic strip, and hidden numbers that become visible in light.

Business owners are urged to stay alert while handling cash.

If you believe a note is counterfeit, don't confront the person presenting it. Instead, note the person's description and call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Additional information on spotting counterfeit money can be found on the Bank of Canada's official website.
