Inquest into overdose death at Southwest Detention Centre underway

The coroner's inquest into the death of Nathaniel Krug at the Southwest Detention Centre in 2021 is officially underway.

The jurors heard instructions from presiding officer Dr. David Eden and inquest counsel Philip Tsui.

The inquest is expected to last six days and will hear from approximately nine witnesses.

Each witness will be questioned by the inquest counsel, a representative of Krug's family, and a representative from the Ministry of the Attorney General.

The jury heard that Krug died after an overdose in the Southwest Detention Centre on March 10. Krug obtained the drugs from another prisoner within the facility.

Krug did not enter the facility with any illicit drugs, however a post mortem revealed two foreign packages of drugs in his body.

The jury will be asked to determine the manner of Krug's death and what changes can be made in correctional settings to prevent similar deaths in the future. The goal of the inquest is not to place blame.

The representative of Krug's family, Dr. Amy Fitzgerald, asked the jury to remember that the inquest "addresses the worst thing that has ever happened in our family." She described Krug as a sweet and helpful person who is missed as a son, nephew, brother, partner and father.
