Windsor Light Music Theatre receives $146K Trillium grant

Windsor-Essex's premier musical theatre company will soon sound much better thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie and Windsor West's Lisa Gretzky announced on Friday a $146,600 Trillium grant for Windsor Light Music Theatre (WLMT).

The grant, awarded to the company in June, has paid for a major upgrade of their audio system, including the purchase of new audio boards, microphones, and other equipment. Most of the WLMT's productions are performed at the Chrysler Theatre.

"I’m thrilled to see Windsor Light Music Theatre receive this important investment from the Ontario Trillium Foundation," said Gretzky. "This $146,600 Capital grant will help ensure that this treasured local organization can continue delivering high-quality, live musical theatre by upgrading essential audio equipment. It’s an investment in our arts community, and in the cultural vibrancy of Windsor for years to come.

WLMT President Connie Farrer said the troupe is looking forward to trying out the new equipment next month during its production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".

"With enhanced audio technology, we’re not just upgrading equipment, we’re elevating the entire experience of live theatre in our region," said Farrer. "Our mission has always been to bring the magic of Broadway to Windsor-Essex, and this support allows us to do that with even greater impact."

WLMT has been performing high-calibre musical productions since 1949, when it was first known as the Windsor Light Opera Association, according to the official website. It's been known by its current name since 2007. The company typically performs two Broadway-style musicals per year, plus one or two youth productions.

The company boasts about 300 volunteers who perform on and off stage, and is the only live theatre group in Windsor-Essex to perform all shows with a live, full-service orchestra.
