Essex man faces charges in Pelee Island frauds

Not only has the Ontario Provincial Police arrested a suspect in two fraud investigations on Pelee Island, but it has also released a list of tips to ensure you're not the next victim.

Two island residents hired a local plumber between last April and August.

The OPP arrested a 29-year-old Essex man for fraud over $5,000 and fraud under $5,000.

Before hiring a contractor, the OPP recommends asking the contractor for a business license and liability insurance. Be sure to check references and don't agree to pay up front.

Written contracts should include the contractor's full name, address, phone number, and HST number. It should also include start and end dates, total cost, and payment schedule, a list of materials and services, and a warranty.

Get receipts for each payment made, and if you pay by e-transfer or cheque, put the note "home renovation deposit" in the memo line.

The OPP believes there are more victims, and asks anyone who thinks they were scammed to give police a call at 1-888-310-1122, Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-8477, or go to www.catchcrooks.com.
