Saints win gold at OCAA soccer championship

For just the second time in the team's history, the St. Clair College Saints women's soccer team has won a gold medal.

The Saints hosted the Ontario College Athletics Association Final Four Championship on the weekend after finishing first in the OCAA West Division in the regular season.

St. Clair defeated Humber 2-1 in overtime in the semi-final match on Saturday, qualifying for the final against the Centennial College Colts.

Just three minutes into the final, the Saints scored when Sierra Lapos delivered a lob pass from 30 yards to Natalie Kersey, who finished far side to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Thirty minutes later, the Saints did it again, this time from Lapos's free kick. The play forced the Colts' keeper out of the game after she collided head-to-head with another teammate.

The Saints sealed their victory late in the match. In the 86th minute, Alessia Olivito unleashed a perfectly struck shot from 24 yards to make it 3-0.

Centennial managed one goal after that, but the Saints scored again and finished the game 4-1.

St. Clair advances to the CCAA National Tournament in Red Deer, Alberta, on November 5.

Victoria Walsh was named the St. Clair Player of the Game, while Brianna Kinsley-Clough won the Fairplay and Sportsmanship Award. Walsh and Natalie Kersey were also named the Championship All Stars, and Alessia Olivito was named Championship MVP.
