Demolition work continues on site of former LDSS

Crews are ready to move on to the next phase of demolition at the former Leamington District Secondary School (LDSS).

A contractor hired by the Municipality of Leamington has completed the first stage of tearing down the building on Talbot Street West and is now moving on with abatement activities.

Once hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead, and mercury are safely removed from inside the building, crews will begin preparing to dismantle the exterior. Exterior dismantling is scheduled to start in the new year, with completion expected by spring 2026.

Construction of the new chimney swift habitat, replacing the old one at the former school, is occurring concurrently with building abatement. The new habitat, located near the municipal walking trail between Oak Street West and Talbot Street West, complies with federal and provincial law, as chimney swifts are a threatened species.

Construction of the habitat must be finished by March 31, 2026. The section of the trail will be closed until then.

Complete information about the LDSS site development can be found on the Municipality's official website.
