Update: Police make extortion arrest after a shooting

Windsor police have charged a man with extortion following a shooting earlier this month.

Police report that just after 6 a.m. on November 2, a masked gunman exited a black SUV at a home on Academy Drive. The suspect then approached the house and returned to the SUV to get a firearm. Surveillance video shows the man firing several rounds at the home before taking off in the SUV toward E.C. Row Avenue.

According to police, the homeowner had borrowed $50,000 from an individual to help with the down payment on the property. When they stopped making payments, the lender allegedly threatened to “send people to his house.”

Investigators identified a 46-year-old man as a suspect in the extortion matter.

On Thursday, members of the Problem-Oriented Policing Unit located and arrested the suspect outside a home on Everts Avenue.

He has been charged with extortion, conspiracy to commit criminal offences, and obstruction of justice.

No one has been arrested in connection with the shots fired, and that investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information or who can identify the suspect is asked to contact the Windsor Police Major Crimes Unit at 519-255-6700, ext. 4830.
