The homicide rate in Windsor rose slightly in 2024 from the previous year.
In 2024, the city experienced six homicides, which included first-degree, second-degree, manslaughter, and infanticide charges. The year before, there were five.
That brought the homicide rate in the city to 1.24 per 100,000 residents, from 1.07 in 2023.
Thunder Bay had the highest homicide rate in the country with eight in 2024, compared to seven in 2023. The rate was 6.08 per 100,000 residents. Thunder Bay's population was 131,594 in 2024.
Canada's largest city, Toronto, had 133 homicides in 2024, and its homicide rate was 1.9 per 100,000 residents.
Statistics Canada said firearms were used in a third of all homicides across Canada,and handguns were used in more than half of all gun-related homicides.
The number of youth charged with a homicide also rose from 72 in 2024, an increase of seven from 2023.
The agency also noted that one in six deaths was by a partner or spouse, and 81 per cent of women's homicides were the result of intimate partner violence.
