Windsor to begin Christmas tree collection this week

The holiday season is now behind us, and the City of Windsor is ready to help residents with the cleanup.

A special pickup for "real" Christmas trees and yard waste will take place starting on Tuesday with zones 1A and 1B. Refer to the Christmas tree icon in your waste collection calendar for details.

Since trees are placed through woodchippers and recycled, only real trees, not artificial, will be accepted for pickup.

Some tips the City has to help residents prepare a tree for recycling include the following.

  • Removing all decorations, lights, wire, tree skirts, stands, and nails.

  • Trees longer than six feet must be cut in half so that they fit in the truck.

  • Trees with "fake snow" on them can't be recycled.

  • Do not leave your tree at the curb in a plastic tree bag. If you must use a bag to carry it to the curb, remove it when you place it and dispose of the bag.

  • Bundle any loose branches, no bigger than four feet, with cedar roping and leave them near the curb with your tree.

  • Place your tree out by the curb only on your assigned pick-up day. Putting it out too early may cause the tree to freeze to the pavement.

  • If you have any leaves or yard waste you'd like to get rid of, please put it out for the day of your tree pickup.

  • Have all materials ready for pickup by 6 a.m. on collection day.

Complete information about Christmas tree and January yard waste collection can be found on the City's official website.
