The Town of Amherstburg received a $3.7 million grant to replace a 100-year-old sanitary sewer.
The work to replace the 425-meter sewer that runs along Richmond Street between Dalhousie Street and Seymour Street will start in the spring of 2027.
"It's 100 years old, it's made of brick, and they don't make them like that anymore, and it's past its useful life, so we're very happy to get this money and upgrade the system," said Amherstburg Mayor Michael Prue.
The town will contribute $1.4 million for the project.
The replacement sewer will increase capacity making room for more development in the town.
“This $3.7 million investment will help the Town of Amherstburg strengthen critical water infrastructure, protect homes from floods, and ensure residents can continue to rely on safe, reliable water services,” said Essex MPP Anthony Leardi.
The grant comes from the province's Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream (MHIP-HSWS).
