More snow is coming. Are you safe from carbon monoxide?

With another blast of winter expected on Sunday, the Lakeshore Fire Department is reminding residents to make sure the vents outside their homes aren't blocked with snow.

That can cause a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide.

"Raising awareness about carbon monoxide is crucial for the safety of our communities," said Lakeshore Fire Chief Jason Suchiu. "Carbon monoxide has no smell or taste, which makes being proactive even more important."

Residents are asked to check and clear snow away from outdoor exhaust vents from appliances like dryers, furnaces, and stoves. They're also urged to ensure their carbon monoxide alarms are working, and that one is placed outside of sleeping areas and on each floor of the home.

Over 65 per cent of carbon monoxide-related injuries and deaths in Ontario occur in the home.

Residents are also asked to clear the snow away from fire hydrants so firefighters can easily and quickly access them. Lakeshore Fire also says it's a good idea to keep lights on outside at night and ensure your house numbers are visible so first responders can find your home in the event of an emergency. Make sure space heaters are at least a meter away from anything combustible, and clear driveways and sidewalks.
