Ontarians may fish for free this Family Day weekend

Families who enjoy fishing will have the opportunity to do so at no cost to them this weekend.

Saturday through Monday represent the first free fishing weekend of 2026 in Ontario. Anglers will be able to fish without having to first buy a licence or Outdoors Card.

"Family Day weekend is a perfect time for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing here in Ontario," said Mike Harris, Ontario Minister of Natural Resources. "Whether you’re a seasoned angler or it’s your first time ice fishing, take advantage of this opportunity to get out and make lasting memories with friends and family."

Those planning to head out on the ice to fish are strongly urged to put safety first. Check out the conditions with local hut operators and anglers before heading out. Clear blue ice tends to be the strongest, while white or honeycombed ice is significantly weaker. Be sure to let someone know where you're headed and when you expect to be back, and dress warmly for comfort and safety.

Catch and possession limits still apply, along with restrictions in sanctuaries and conservation areas as laid out by the provincial fishing regulations.

Anyone participating in a free fishing weekend must carry a government-issued ID with their name and date of birth.

Free fishing weekends in Ontario are also set for Mother's Day weekend in May, Father's Day weekend in June, and Family Fishing Week from June 27 to July 5.
