The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Essex have warned residents to ensure their vehicles are secure after a series of break-ins.
Investigators say they have been busy over the past week, taking complaints from people reporting overnight thefts from their vehicles.
Many of the thefts were along Arthur Avenue, Fairview Avenue, and Wilson Avenue in the Town of Essex, but break-and-enters have been reported throughout Windsor-Essex.
The OPP is calling attention to its "Lock It or Lose It" initiative, which includes the following tips.
Lock your vehicle when parking, even if it's just for a few minutes.
Keep your windows rolled up.
Bring any valuables with you. If you must leave valuables in the vehicle, keep them out of sight.
Keep your ownership and proof of insurance in your wallet, not the glove compartment. Many insurance companies offer apps that allow you to show the "pink slip" on your phone.
Take the keys with you. Never leave a vehicle running.
Park in a well-lit area at night or for extended periods of time.
If your vehicle is broken into, report it immediately.
Anyone with information about these incidents, or wanting to report one, should call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. If it's an emergency, call 911.
Anonymous tips should be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
