Windsor police say that their partnership with emergency department nurses has resulted in fewer patients being sent to hospitals.
On Wednesday, police provided an update on the Nurse Police Team (NPT) via social media. Between January 1 and March 9, there were 510 calls for service.
During that time period, personnel diverted 138 patients away from emergency departments, a 65 per cent increase from the same period in 2025, thereby relieving pressure on hospital staff.
NPT members also made 90 referrals to substance abuse and mental health providers, a 56 per cent rise from 2025.
Nurses treated 33 substance-related wounds on the spot, representing a 32 per cent increase from last year. They also distributed 140 harm reduction kits, almost double the number from the same period in 2025.
The NPT is a partnership with Windsor Regional Hospital. It was first established as a pilot project in January 2023. Police officers work with WRH nurses to respond to substance-related calls.
