Unemployment in Windsor hits 8.1 per cent in February

The jobless rate rose 0.2 percentage points in February, and the employment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 60.6 per cent.

Statistics Canada released the results of it's February Labour Force Survey on Friday morning.

In Windsor, the jobless rate also increased, but not by as much. The local unemployment rate went from 8 per cent in January to 8.1 per cent last month.

The local economy lost 2,800 jobs as the labour participation rate fell by nine-tenths of a per cent to 63.8 per cent.

The number of unemployed in the Windsor region actually fell from 21,300 to 20,700 in February.

Windsor did not have the highest jobless rate in Canada. That dubious honour fell to Belleville-Quinte West, where unemployment hit 9.9 per cent.

Young Canadians and core-aged men suffered the most job losses. For those 15 to 24, the number of net positions lost totalled 47,000, while 41,000 positions for men 25 to 54 were eliminated. Other demographics remained largely unchanged.

Services-producing industries lost 56,000 jobs. Those producing goods lost 28,000 positions. Most of the positions lost were full-time and in the private sector for the second consecutive month.

After the loss of 67,000 positions in Ontario in January, employment held steady. However, an increase in the number of people looking for work, by 28,000, pushed the provincial unemployment rate up to 7.6 per cent, a three-tenths of a percentage point increase.

The average hourly wage continues to climb in Canada with an increase of 3.9 per cent last month, or $1.42 to $37.56.

Compared to the U.S. jobless rate, and using American criteria, Canada's jobless rate was 5.6 per cent. In the U.S., it was 4.4 per cent.
