Windsor-Detroit Tunnel closure planned for Sunday

Anyone planning to cross the border through the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel on Sunday morning may want to adjust their plans.

The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel is set to close at 6 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, for a cross-border emergency exercise.

"The planned exercise is a critical part of the tunnel's emergency response procedure," said Windsor Detroit Tunnel CEO Tal Czudner. "In the unlikely event that an emergency occurs, both sides of the border will be prepared to handle the situation safely and efficiently. With closer scrutiny being paid to border security, this test is a vital assessment of operational readiness."

The tunnel will reopen at 10 a.m. when the exercise is complete.

This year, Windsor Fire and Rescue Services, Essex-Windsor EMS, Windsor Police, Canada Border Services Agency, Detroit Police, Detroit Fire, and Homeland Security will participate in the exercise.
