Grant helps house 38 homeless young men

A $116,200 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation helped homeless young men find housing in the community.

The grant allowed the Windsor Residence for Young Men hire a Youth Housing Specialist for the last two years.

"This project was designed to help our capacity to be able to ensure that youth can be rapidly rehoused in an appropriate and timely manner. The wonderful thing is the project works," said Jason Weinberg, executive director.

The program helped to support 139 youth. Of those, 43 were actively experiencing homelessness and 38 found stable housing conditions.

"Now that the grant is complete, we would consider this a very successful pilot in which we would present to other funders, other donors, other philanthropists, in hope that we can continue that work and expand upon it," said Weinberg.

Weinberg said while the grant has helped to ease the pressure on their programming there are still many youth in the community facing homelessness.

"Unfortunately, the cost of housing has not reduced nor has the income sources available to the most vulnerable populations in our community. Housing stock hasn't been introduced that would alleviate the problem, so this issue is still existing."
