The City of Windsor is considering the former Tourism Ontario property for a new central library.
The city has submitted an expression of interest for the property to the province.
"I think having that property certainly fits nicely with city hall as a campus and I think it gives us some great opportunities to look at what a library future would look like for the central branch downtown," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.
The Central Branch of the Windsor Public library is currently located in the Paul Martin Building.
The building is being renovated into a boutique hotel and the city is leasing part of the space for the library for the short term.
The Central Branch may need to close for a short period before the end of the year to accommodate the renovations.
"We haven't landed on anything specifically. The first step would be getting access and control of that building. The province has put out the expression of interest, we have responded saying we're interested. But this a multi-year plan, it's not going to happen tomorrow, it's not going to happen next year, we're going to have to map this out," said Dilkens.
