Council requests report on centralizing homelessness and addictions services

Windsor City Council passed a motion Monday to research how homelessness and addiction services can be centralized in one location downtown.

City staff will research other service models and speak to other service providers to develop a plan that would reutilize Windsor Arena as part of the centralized location.

"By doing Strengthen the Core we've identified what are the biggest things we need to do and we have to change the way we take care of people. Warehousing and the variety store style of taking care of people has got to stop," said Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino.

The cost of developing the central location will be part of the report being developed for council. It will also identify which services could be relocated.

"I think what we're trying to do is move forward in a very deliberate and sensible way that allows us to provide services that are going to improve the situation for the people who need the help but really for the businesses too who are suffering the impacts," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

A timeline for the report has not been finalized but Agostino said he would like to see it before the end of this term of council.
