Many in the region will soon benefit from high-speed internet

High-speed internet is being expanded across the region, thanks to a multi-million dollar funding announcement by the province.

The Ontario government recently announced more than $49 million to bring high-speed internet to 4,851 more homes, farms, and businesses in Ridgetown and surrounding communities in Chatham-Kent, as well as in Leamington, Lakeshore, West Elgin, and Southwest Middlesex.

The new fibre infrastructure is part of the Accelerated High-Speed Internet Program.

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Steve Pinsonneault said high-speed internet isn’t just a convenience, it’s essential for work, school, and staying connected in today’s digital world.

"This milestone is part of Ontario’s plan to expand critical infrastructure. Across the province, Ontario has committed $1.92 billion to bring high-speed internet to approximately 212,000 premises, ensuring our communities stay connected for generations to come," said Pinsonneault.

Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Trevor Jones said the continued investments help keep communities connected.

"Reliable internet access supports local agriculture, small businesses, and families," Jones noted during a recent announcement at the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus.

Chatham-Kent council has been asking for extended high-speed internet service in Ridgetown.

Councillor Anthony Ceccacci said Ridgetown is “lacking” when it comes to high-speed internet because it is essentially deemed served regardless of the internet speed, but added that many businesses and residents are struggling to have high-speed fibre.
