WRH honours staff for work in organ donation

Four members of staff at Windsor Regional Hospital were awarded Hidden Heroes certificates for their efforts in organ and tissue donation.

The Trillium Gift of Life Network recognizes April as Be a Donor month. The award acknowledges employees at the hospital who support patients and families through the organ donation process.

Last year, Windsor Regional Hospital was involved in 14 organ or tissue donations.

Dr. Riley Jakob, Mackenzie Clifford, Dan Fraser, and Jennifer Jesso were honoured as hidden heroes during the process.

"These particular individuals really showed dedication and compassion and a true dedication to organ and tissue donation and preserving the opportunity for families at the end of life to have the opportunity for organ and tissue donation," said Dr. Natalie Malus.

Jesso said as an ER nurse those opportunities are often born out of traumatic situations and it can be difficult to have those conversations.

"It's really a true honour to be there for somebody in their hardest moments of their life so I feel like having a caring demeanor, being as comforting as possible and talking to them and educating them on how truly important organ donation is, that really helps," said Jesso.

One organ donor can save up to eight lives and tissue donors can transform the lives of up to 75 more.

There are thousands of people throughout Ontario waiting for a life-saving donation.
