Student 'Chief' opens Police Week at Devonshire Mall

Chief for the Day Victoria Martin helped to kick off Police Week at Devonshire Mall on Thursday.

Martin, a Grade 6 student from St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School, was selected after submitting an essay highlighting how she helps the community.

"I just thought it's be cool to see what it's like to be a police officer and what they do," said Martin. "I've learned about each different type of police officer, like the ones that work for the canines, the bomb squad and SWAT teams."

Others in the community will have the opportunity to check out what Windsor police and other emergency services do at Devonshire Mall this week, where police vehicles and other equipment will be on display.

Officers and civilian personnel will also be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate how some of the equipment is used.

"It's a great way for us to connect with the community. It humanizes our officers, it humanizes the profession, and it's a great recruitment tool as well," said Crowley.

Police Week runs until May 9.
