Detroit's new Professional Women's Hockey Team (PWHL) team is moving right along with the selection of its first bench boss.
Westland, Michigan native Josh Sciba has been named the team's first head coach. The announcement comes two weeks after the club selected Manon Rhéaume as its first general manager.
"Josh is a highly respected coach with a knowledge of the game and experience at all levels of women's hockey that set him apart, and his passion for teaching and individual character are qualities I value in a leader," said Rhéaume. "Hockeytown is in his blood, and this is an opportunity I know he is eager to embrace with an understanding of what it means to represent this city and be part of its legacy."
Sciba, 41, played college hockey for Notre Dame, and in 2007, he joined the coaching staff at Niagara University, with three seasons as an assistant and the fourth season as the head coach.
He moved on to Colgate University, where he served as an assistant coach for four additional years, and from 2016 to 2024, Sciba was head coach of the women's team at Union College in New York State.
More recently, he spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for the PWHL's New York Sirens. He also won an Olympic gold medal serving on the coaching staff of Team USA's women's team at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.
Detroit will host the PWHL Draft on June 17 at the Fox Theatre and will begin league play later this fall.
