Windsor-Essex beach testing season begins with one advisory

It's the last weekend of May, and that means the opening of beach season in Windsor-Essex.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) began its seasonal beach bacteria testing initiative this week, and the first results indicated one local public beach with an elevated E.coli level.

Lakeview Park West Beach in Belle River is the only regional beach under a "code yellow" for high levels of bacteria.

Weekly testing, which took place on Wednesday, found an E.coli level of 449.

Swimming is not recommended at Lakeview, though the beach itself and other amenities are open.

Windsor-Essex's six other public beaches are fully open after testing at levels below the provincial threshold. However, Sandpoint Beach remains closed indefinitely due to concerns by the City of Windsor about public safety.

East Park Beach on Pelee Island is participating in the program for the first time.

Complete beach testing results are found on the health unit's official website.
