LDSS students convince Leamington council to adopt environmental initiatives

Can students make a difference? Absolutely.

A case in point would be the decision of Leamington's municipal council last week to adopt two new environmental initiatives after a presentation from students from Leamington District Secondary School.

The students came to the council prepared to highlight their concerns about plastic pollution and microplastics in the environment.

By the end of the presentation, they persuaded councillors to place recycling options at six municipal locations and to prioritize natural plantings over artificial turf in municipal right of ways and public parks.

"The LDSS EcoTeam demonstrated how passionate and engaged young people can make a real difference in their community," said Mayor Hilda MacDonald. "Their presentation highlighted important environmental issues and proposed practical solutions. We are pleased to support these initiatives and recognize the positive impact youth can have on protecting our natural environment and shaping local decision-making."

Sixty recycling bins will be placed throughout Seacliff Park, Rick Atkins Park, Waterfront Market Plaza, Kinsmen Ball Diamonds, Leamington Pure Flavor Soccer Complex, and Mersea Park.

Administration also approved the use of natural plantings, supporting a more environmentally sustainable approach to municipal landscaping.
